Many believe it to be just a legend, something to tell the young ones before they sleep and dream. But I know the truth, I know this story once happened in our past. Many many years ago, at the beginning of time, the land was devoid of animals but filled with plants and air. It had been created thus by the many gods and goddesses. But among them, they began to feel that it was missing something, something important. That was when they decided to create life. Each god or goddess created many species, with particular links to them, but wolves were still not thought of. Birds roamed the skies, fish the seas, deer and rodents the land. Lions ran under the sun and the day, while owls flew the night and moon. However, the lady of the moon, Luna, and the lord of the night, Caelum, soon fell in love and their relationship brought a child, a son whom they name Lupus. As he grew, he made many of his own little creations, but he still felt that he had not fulfilled his destiny. On the day of his twenty-first birthday, the young god was sitting under his mother’s sacred symbol and his father’s darkness, when a sudden thought came into him. He was the son of the moon and the night, he would make a beast that would rule that time, a beast that would love the night and howl to the moon. He made the first wolf. Many years passed and the world grew, along with it’s inhabitants. The wolves flourished, a powerful species that hunted through the night, howled to the moon and worshipped their god Lupus well. Yet Lupus himself was growing tired of his creatures and decided to change them. Some wolves he took and gave them spines and firey natures, others he took and made small, but in return he gave them magnificient wings so that they could visit his father’s domain. Some wolves he made huge and bear-like and others he left as they were. Then, as he dusted his hands off, he made one last change. He gave a small group of wolves, those who had followed him the best, the power to melt into the mist and fog of the land. All was fine for many a year, the wolves accepting these changes and living, breeding and dieing as before. And yet, there was a stirring of strife amongst them, for not all of them wanted to be what they were. The massive dire wolves thought that Lupus had made them huge so that they could become the leaders and rule the land. The winged wolves thought that knowledge was the key and they were to teach all of the wolves their own ways. The spined wolves didn’t care for anyone and drifted apart, being the first to disbelieve in their powerful god. The mundane wolves who had not changed were envious of the others and hated them. Lastly, the ghost wolves distanced themselves from all the fighting and strife, thinking that it would just go away by itself. They were devoted to their god and thought everything had a reason. And so the fighting grew. Up in his kingdom, their god Lupus had troubles of his own, for there were wars among the gods and goddesses. The deities grew farther and farther from their creations until the day came when they left completely. They abandonded their beautiful world and left it at the mercy of the creatures who lived upon it. However, they left with a prophecy of the far future. Our world we leave, our wondrous home, For we must go, we must roam, But all is not lost for the beasts of the land, In the future power will be placed in hand, Fang shall cross fang, among each and all, The mighty will rise, the weak wil fall, But for each race that we cared for, For each creature we gave life for, Hope will lay in the hearts of the young, Under the moon and under the sun, It’s in your own hearts that you must look, To find the peace that we all took. The words meant that in the future, when anger and hatred are rife, then it is to the young and pure of heart that we must look. They will free us of the fury and pain we feel. They will lead us to a higher plane. They, the chosen ones will bring us salvation when we most need it. All of us. But they also left us with a warning, that evil breeds sins and sins breed demons. They told us that the world would be left at the mercy of these foul creatures and those that sold their soul to the devil would be the enemies of all and the downfall of the chosen ones. Many believe that in each of us there is a choice. The choice whether to sell our soul to the devil or to worship the long lost gods and enlighten ourselves with purity. It will be us that decide our fate on judgement day. We will be the ones to decide whether we will be blinded by hate or filled with love. The fate of the land is in your paws, wolf. What will it be?
